The tradition of making tissue paper ornaments is linked to the custom of decorating living rooms, mainly on the occasion of annual church festivals. It was one of the most common decorative forms used in the countryside. Tissue paper was made mainly by women, known as florists or tissue paper makers, who made flowers from paper or crinkled tissue paper during the winter evenings. The inspiration for the ornaments was mountain nature, so poppies, daisies, cornflowers, forget-me-nots, roses, chrysanthemums and bluebells were the most common.
Blotting paper flowers were used to decorate wreaths for All Saints' Day. They were used to decorate wayside shrines and statues during processions. They were also used to decorate wedding ceremonies: they were used to make bouquets for the bride, to decorate wedding dresses and garlands. They were also woven into Easter palms, harvest wreaths and wedding rods. They were combined into garlands to decorate sacred images.
Over time, various tissue paper techniques were developed, such as cutting, twisting, rolling, "candying" or "beading". They were protected from external influences and loss of colour and shape by the wax in which they were dipped.
