Many centuries ago, on a lofty hill in Čechovice, where today stands the beautiful St. Catherine's Church, the Kotulinskis' palace and the ruins of the Wilczkos' castle, there was Bożkowiec. Our ancestors used to meet here to make offerings to their gods, mainly to the god of storms and lightning - Perun, who could bring floods, forest fires, famine and death to the poor people.
In the 'sacred grove' grew mighty oak trees and among them a tiny larch. Only the priest had access to the grove, who appointed ceremonies and accepted offerings addressed to Perun.
One day the first missionaries arrived in the Chekhovian lands and began to spread the news of the good God. This God loved all people and commanded them to adhere to the principle "love your neighbour as yourself". The inhabitants gladly welcomed the missionaries and Christianity took hold in the new lands. However, the warlike Hungarians destroyed the Great Moravian state and the ancestors returned to paganism. It was not until 966 that Prince Mieszko I was baptised and the people abandoned the idol Perun, of whom only the legend of the 'sacred grove' of Bozkovec tells.
