Fidel Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, President of the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Cuba, arrived on a visit to Czechoslovakia on 23 June 1972.
During his almost week-long state visit, Fidel Castro spent two days relaxing in the High Tatras. After laying a wreath at the monument to the town's liberators, he flew from Bratislava to the Tatra Mountains, where he stayed at the Grand Hotel in Stary Smokovec.
In Stary Smokovec, he watched a programme of the folklore music and dance ensemble - Čarnice. At a friendly meeting on 25 June 1972, Jozef Lenárt and P. Colotka presented him with a Liptov costume and a whipped walaschka as a souvenir. During the two days spent in the Tatras, Fidel Castro enjoyed bryndza gnocchi. In the evening, he played table tennis with the hotel staff, undressed to the waist.
During the communist period, political leaders often invited their prominent guests to go chamois hunting in the High Tatras. Fidel Castro, who shot the last chamois in the Tatras, came to our national park for such a hunt. On this historically last hunt, he shot two chamois with two shots unplanned, instead of the one chamois allowed. They were the last chamois that were allowed to be officially hunted.
Fidel Castro was a Cuban lawyer, revolutionary and president of the country. He is credited with the creation of the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere. He was one of the world's longest-serving presidents. Until his death, he was considered the most influential man in the country. He was in office from 2 December 1976 until 24 February 2008.
