The Knights Templar - an ancient order of chivalry founded in France in the 12th century. It was founded by Hugo de Payens and Gottfried de Saint-Omer, at the same time Hugo de Payens was its first Grand Master.
They took their name from the Templum Domini in Jerusalem and became part of the official church structures in 1128.
Their main task was the protection of important pilgrimage sites in the Holy Land, as well as caravan communications and drinking water oases; in this way they formed a superbly organized military force.
For centuries, the Knights Templar constituted the real administration of the Latin kingdom, paying no dues, taxes or tolls, and also acting as bankers, with whom both popes and royalty opened accounts. The largest debtor was the French king Philip IV. Nice, in order not to have to pay his debt, destroyed the entire Templar order.
The Templars were also in Slovakia. It is said that Johannes Gottfried von Herberstein, the Master of the Templars, who died suddenly in 1230 during his visit to Hungary, is said to be buried here, under mysterious circumstances in the Templar monastery on the Monk's Mountain in Ludrova.
His remains, together with a large treasure, should be somewhere in front of or under the altar of the Church of All Saints in Ludrová, as evidenced by a tombstone with completely worn-out letters.
Other sites where the Templars were located include Likava Castle, the Martinček locality, and Slovenská Ľupča.
