Description of the place

The surroundings of Jaśliska are picturesque wilderness, which has successfully defended itself against industrial influences, and human interference has transformed the area very little. Clear rivers, forests and meadows flowering with herbs are the trademarks of this part of the Low Beskid.

Jaśliska is a village located in the Subcarpathian Province, in the Low Beskids, on a steep hill by the Jasiołka River and its left-bank tributary, the Bielcza river. Jaśliska is a former defensive border town, which guarded the road from the south of Europe (as evidenced by the remains of defensive walls). Situated on one of the main trans-Carpathian routes, Jaśliska was granted a town charter in 1365 and for centuries lived off trade, especially concerning Hungarian wine. Sixteenth-century wine cellars have survived to this day under some estates at the market square. Crafts developed: in the 16th century, guilds of potters, blacksmiths, tailors, saddlers, and locksmiths were located here. The city was prosperous and vibrant with life - as proved by the beautifully decorated wooden buildings of Jaśliska. The historic complex of wooden buildings with the preserved urban layout of the old town was included in the Subcarpathian Wooden Architecture Trail. The town's development and good fortune were interrupted at the beginning of the 19th century by a thorough reconstruction of a route through the Dukla Pass, to which the vast majority of transit traffic moved. No longer located on the main communication route, the town began to decline, and in 1934 Jaśliska lost its municipal rights. The town gives the impression of a dormant location, the uniform urban layout takes us through time - which clearly slows down in Jaśliska.

A place in the movie

The residents of Jaśliska hosted the crews of many film productions at their home. These included the Silver Bear award-winning film Twarz (dir. M. Szumowska, 2018) at the Berlin Festival, as well as the Oscar candidate Boże Ciało (dir. J. Komasa, 2019). The popular and critically acclaimed film made Jaśliska famous on a global scale. However, before Hollywood heard about Jaśliska, the village made its debut on the big screen thanks to the film Strawberry Wine (directed by D. Jabłoński, 2007). This film marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Jaśliska.

On 15-16 August 2020, the opening event of the Podkarpackie Film Trail took place in Jaśliska. The organisers of the opening event were: Podkarpacka Film Commission, Voivodeship House of Culture in Rzeszów, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Jaśliska Municipality, Communal Cultural and Reading Centre in Jaśliska and Association "In the Land of Sources".
