Description of the place
The town of Sabinov is situated in the valley of the Torysa River, on the border of the Čergov and Bachurne mountains. The I/68 road from Prešov to Stara Ľubovňa as well as the railway line Prešov - Plaveč runs through it. The square and side streets, where the bastions and walls of the former fortifications of the town are located, highlighting its medieval glory, are among the unusual experiences of visitors to Sabinov. The oldest preserved buildings in Sabinov date back to the end of the 14th century, the most important and at the same time the oldest architectural monument is the Gothic church dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
A place in the movie
The well-preserved historic town inspired the creators of the Oscar-winning film The Shop on Main Street, who decided to shoot here, even though the original plot of the novel was set in Humenné, where the author of the book, Ladislav Grosman, also comes from. In the centre of the town, there is an exposition reminding of the filming of the Oscar-winning film. The statues of St. James and St. John the Evangelist located in the Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist became one of the stimuli for the documentary film series “Po stopách Majstra Pavla”. The desire to return to his native region brought here director Marek Škop, who filmed a scene of the Oscar-nominated film “Eva Nová” here. The atmosphere of the famous fair in Sabinov was used by the creators of the film "Loli paradička", who filmed several scenes here.
