Stary Dzików, Orthodox Church of St. Dmitri
Lokacja szczegółowa
A place in the movie
The Orthodox church of St. Dmitri in Stary Dzików is a brick Greek Catholic church built in 1904. At the end of World War II, as a result of the displacement of the Ukrainian population, the Greek Catholic parish ceased to exist. The abandoned church was devastated around 1950. The furnishings of the church have not survived, except for a few icons currently in the Museum in Lubaczów. For several years the church was used as a warehouse of the Municipality Cooperative "Samopomoc Chłopska", then for many years it was not used. On January 3–7, 2007, Andrzej Wajda shot scenes for the film "Katyn" in the church and in front of it. Inside, the scenery remained, including wooden, several-story bunks on which the prisoners of the Kozelsk camp slept.
This building is shown several times in the film. The most poignant scene is when on Christmas Eve of 1939 soldiers are waiting for the first star. The general speaks to his fellow prisoners, wishing them all the best, and then they sing together the Christmas carol “Bóg się rodzi” [”God Is Born”].
