Description of the place
Vlkolínec is a mountain settlement, part of the district town of Ruzomberok. Vlkolínec takes its name from the wolves that once inhabited the surrounding forests. What is most interesting in the case of Vlkolínec is the unique urban complex of original folk buildings, well-kept log houses with stone foundations, wooden or clay walls and wooden shingle roofs. Typical are long yards, wooden houses, patterned house walls, terraced fields and mountain meadows on the slopes of the hills.
A place in the movie
Vlkolínec is not an open-air museum, but an inhabited village. In the middle of Vlkolínec, the main street splits into two ways. One leads to the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, the other to Sidorovo hill. In the centre of the settlement the most frequently photographed objects are also located: a two-story wooden belfry and a log well. An example of original home furnishings in a typical Slovak mountain village is the Peasant's House. These locations in the town itself, as well as in its beautiful surroundings, have become the "target" of many filmmakers.
