Tourists can get to know the Jánošík Region through the surrounding natural beauty or through the preserved historical monuments in the region. There are also those who prefer folk traditions and customs and try to get to know this distinctive region through the unique Terchov music or folklore.
There is, however, another very unique way of getting to know Terchová and its surroundings through the carving art of the well-known native Štefan Hanulik. This renowned carver, like his colleagues, began by making pump-houses, but later his work features old shepherd themes, sensitively enriched with various Janosik, folklore and other motifs. Formally and thematically, he developed the cultural heritage of his native village and its surroundings. In his work, he represented himself and his family, but also the folk art of the Jánošík region with dignity.
His best-known work is the 'Terchov crib', which has been part of the local church of St Cyril and Methodius for 35 years. It has several interconnected parts: the first part depicts the 'old Terchova' with its crafts and characteristic period colouring, the second the place of Jesus' birth - the humble Bethlehem - and the third the 'sumptuous Jerusalem'. The work of Štefan Hanuliak was followed by his sons. The Terchov crib is open to tourists all year round, but visitors can enjoy the right atmosphere on the feast of the Nativity of God (25 December).
