Many tourists who are trying to get to know the Spiš region perfectly will be pleased to learn about it "through the stomach". Slaughter in the countryside has a long tradition in the Spiš region. However, the slaughter of a pig is not only about gaining a livelihood, but it is also a social festival to which whole families and sometimes even whole villages come together. Nowadays, some villages even hold public killings accompanied by a cultural programme.
The region was once crossed by important trade routes, along which many merchants and craftsmen travelled. During their long journeys across Europe, they appreciated the hospitality and quality of the gastronomy and were able to reward them accordingly. This forced the locals to constantly improve their products. They rested mainly in inns in Spišské Vlachy or Spišské Podhradie, and it was in the latter that the tradition of the famous Spiš sausages began. Unfortunately, the original recipe of the master butcher Štefan Varsányi has not survived to this day.
The meat industry in Spišské Tomášovce still produces some of the best quality and most popular sausages in the region. The sausages, which are popular throughout Slovakia, are distinguished by the quality of the raw materials used, the way they are processed and their balanced taste. Once eaten, they retain a delicate texture and are crisp and juicy. Nowadays, they are most reminiscent of the original " Spiš sausages".
These Tomaszów sausages cannot be bought in supermarket chains and are only available in local butchers' shops in the Spiš region.
