Herbalism has a long history. Since prehistoric times, people have relied on the healing effects of plants found in nature. In later times, healing with plants was associated with various rituals, which is why many herbalists were referred to as sorcerers. Modern medicine has gradually marginalized herbalism.
Nowadays, there is a cure for almost everything. Despite this, many people are returning to tradition and seeking help in herbs. The Spiš region is rich in mountain meadows where a large number of medicinal and rare plants can be found. Visitors are attracted by their scent and colour. The Spiš saffron with its purple flowers accompanied by primroses decorates the meadows throughout the spring. In summer, the meadows are full of marguerites and various types of orchids. Aster, gentian, bellflower, ponytail and others can also be found in the area.
Herbalism and the production of products from medicinal plants are practiced in Spišské Tomášovce. The civic association that was established there offers a large number of ointments, tinctures, soaps and fragrant souvenirs made from herbs. In the garden of the visitor centre, locals grow various medicinal plants, which are then dried, packaged and offered as a unique souvenir of the Slovak Paradise. In addition, the association organises various workshops showing how to make herbal products and events aimed at learning about herbs directly in the mountain meadows.
