"Be subject to the white eagle, wish health to your body, and health to your eye, for when you oppose him, he will gouge out your eyes, and then he will skin you alive. And when you carry him peacefully on your head he will also give you peace, believe my words.

This is how the famous chronicler, Andrzej Komoniecki, in his Biejaopis refers to the coat of arms of Żywiec, in which the Duke of Oświęcim, at the beginning of 1400, placed the head of a bison with a white eagle between its horns. The alderman Komoniecki also recalls that the Żywczacy family received this coat of arms to commemorate the capture of this huge animal in Międzybrodzie. As an expression of loyalty to the then owner, after capturing the bison they led it by the golden spike stuck in its nostrils to Oświęcim, the seat of the Prince. This made him very happy and he granted the town a coat of arms. Since then, Żywiec has prided itself on the presence of this unique animal in its history.
