The most famous prisoner of Ljubov Castle was the famous adventurer, traveller and coloniser Maurycy Beniowski (Móric Beňovský). In 2016, the Ľubovňa Museum - Castle in Stará Ľubovňa opened an exhibition entitled 'Móric Beňovský, the most famous prisoner of Ľubovňa Castle'. He was "imprisoned" from the castle prison in 1786.
Móric Beňovský is one of the most important personalities of our history. An important part of his life is connected with the Spiš region. Beňovský took part in battles against the Polish King Stanislav August Poniatowski, for which he was imprisoned in the castle in Stará Ľubovňa. A legend tells of his escape from the castle. It is said that he was helped to freedom by his girlfriend, who got the castle guards drunk, entered his cell and, hiding under her skirts, Móric got out unnoticed.
Móric Beňovský, full name Matúš Móric Michal František Serafín August Beňovský, was born on 20 September 1746 in the village of Vrbové. He was a Slovak adventurer, traveller, writer and coloniser. This 'king of Madagascar' was also a colonel in the French army, a commander in the Polish army and an Austrian soldier. He was the first European to sail the North Pacific, where he explored the west coast of Alaska. He was the first Slovak to explore four continents: Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. He was the first Slovak to explore St Lawrence Island. He was an important explorer of Madagascar, where he became the first king. All this influenced the development of several countries, including Poland, the USA, France, Austria and Madagascar. In 1786, he "jumped" from the castle prison at the castle in Stará Ľubovňa. That same year he died in Mauritania after an unexpected French attack.
