Statue of the Good Soldier Svejk in Humenné

Country: Slovakia

Region: Presov Region

Type of inspiration: Visual arts

Inspiracja

The story is set during the First World War. The train stopped in the town of Humenné in eastern Slovakia. Among the passengers was the good warrior Josef Švejk (Švejk) along with his comrades from the 91st infantry regiment from České Budějovice. Oblajtnant Lukáš became thirsty for cognac and sent Švejk for a bottle. They knew that cognac could be bought at the station because that's where the Jews sold it. However, this plan was thwarted by Lieutenant Dub. As proof that the bottle contained only 'great' iron mineral water from the station well, the soldier Szwejk drank the bottle in one gulp.

The character of Szwejk is characterised by great effort, literally obeying the orders he receives and, in his own way, mocking all authority.

This story comes from a novel that exposed the futility of war through humour and satire. The author of the story of the soldier is Jaroslav Hašek. The fourth part of the novel was written by Karel Vaněk. In 2000, the world's first statue was unveiled as a reminder of a literary event. Josef Schwejk, of supernatural dimensions, stands near the railway station and is wearing an Austro-Hungarian uniform. Only this statue was licensed.
