While hiking in the Slovak Paradise, visitors are likely to come across the only tourist centre directly in this national park - Kláštorisko, once a Carthusian monastery, now just ruins offering tourists a rest and a chance to recharge their batteries before the next journey.
Volunteers are involved in ensuring that this place is still in service. Throughout the summer, events are organised to repair and maintain the ruins of the monastery or to guide tourists. The life of a volunteer at the Monastery is reminiscent of life in the past. Participants sleep in a tent, hygiene is carried out in the river or waterfall, food is prepared from ingredients available on site. One gets up early in the morning to get as much done as possible - whether it is removing weeds, repairing benches, fetching water from the spring, or even preserving the monastery walls themselves. There is work for everyone. The reward for the work is an evening sitting around the fire with a guitar, where everything and nothing is discussed.
Volunteering is not for people who think of a holiday as just sunbathing in the sun. It is hard work in challenging conditions. But there is a spiritual side to this activity. People can deepen their relationship not only with nature, but especially with themselves. The friendships that are formed here are real and last for many years. The proof is that many volunteers keep coming back to help and bring their families with them.
