Description of the place
Grybów is located on the border of the Low Beskids and the Rożnów Foothills, on the Biała River. A royal city, founded in 1340 for colonists from Silesia and Germany at the crossroads of trade routes to Ruthenia and Hungary. There was a school of Veit Stoss here and probably the famous figure of the so-called Beautiful Virgin Mary from Krużlowa was made here. The town stands out for its interesting neo-Gothic architecture. Among others, the Minor Basilica of St Catherine is built in this style. In addition, the town also has the historic Hosch Manor, a synagogue, an old vicarage and a neo-Gothic town hall. There are several World War I cemeteries and a Jewish cemetery in the city.
A place in the movie
Grybów is mainly used for its picturesque neo-Gothic architecture. In Kieslowski's Podwójne życie Weroniki, the panorama of Grybow with the spire of St. Catherine's Basilica appears several times. We can also see the local railway bridge with its unique design. The town square also appears in the 1st episode of Znaki szczególne, when the main character gets off the bus here.
