Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is located in Lesser Poland, in the Wadowice poviat in the Wieliczka Foothills, at the foot of the Żar Mountain, on the Cedron River. The town was founded in the first half of the 17th century by Mikołaj Zebrzydowski, Voivode of Kraków. Railway lines from Kraków to Zakopane and Bielsko-Biała converge in Kalwaria. The city can be a starting point for tourist trails leading e.g. to Maków Podhalański and to Koskowa Góra. The Latin name Kalwaria [Calvary] is the equivalent of the Hebrew word Golgotha, meaning the hill on which Jesus was crucified. This is due to the Bernardine Fathers' Passion and Marian shrine located in the town, which in the year 1999 (Mannerist architectural complex and landscape pilgrimage park from the 17th century) was the only Calvary in the world to be included on the UNESCO list. This facility is a place of religious worship and a destination for many pilgrimages, mainly during the Holy Week, when extremely impressive Passion mysteries are performed there.
A place in the movie
Due to the sanctuary on the site, Kalwaria is used primarily in productions (fiction and documentary) on religious themes. Sometimes its landscape values are taken into account. The sanctuary's facilities can be seen in the film Pamiątka z Kalwarii by Jerzy Hoffman and Edward Skórzewski and in the film Z dalekiego kraju by Krzysztof Zanussi. The vicinity of the sanctuary was also used to record one of the scenes in Juliusz Machulski's Vinci, in which the main character comes to visit his mother. Another distinctive landmark of Kalwaria is the railway station, which forms the backdrop for scenes in the films: Osiemnaście by Przemysław Młynczyk and Bilet na księżyc by Jacek Bromski.
