Description of the place
A town in the Nowy Sącz district located on the Poprad River. Known for its healing mineral waters, good skiing conditions (in the nearby Sucha Dolina, Wierchomla and Kokuszka Mała) and historic buildings. Founded by Casimir the Great as one of the border settlements. Today, within its limits, there is a border crossing to Slovakia (Mniszek nad Popradem). Due to the presence of mineral waters and exceptionally beautiful location, Piwniczna is rich in both health resorts and an extensive accommodation base. It is one of the most popular holiday resorts in the Sądecczyzna region. Noteworthy is the market square, whose urban layout has not changed since the Middle Ages. In Piwniczna there is also a mineral water bottling plant, as well as the Artistic Pump Room and the Spa Park. The town and its surroundings are inhabited by the ethnographic group of the Poprad Highlanders, also known as the Black Highlanders. The famous actress Danuta Szaflarska came from Kosarzyska, one of the hamlets of Piwniczna.
A place in the movie
The landscapes of Piwniczanie can be seen in the series "Polish Roads" starting from its 2nd part. In the film "Winter Twilight" (1956) Piwniczna is a small borderland town where the drama of the main characters takes place. A church, a railway station, a market square, rural buildings and interiors appear here. The town and its hamlets are also the setting of Władysław Ślesicki's famous documentaries "Góry" and "Chyłe poland". They show both the hardships of life in the mountains and the contrasting beauty of the local landscapes. Stills from Piwniczna can also be found in the film "My Nikifor" by an attentive observer.
