About the movie
Witold Lesiewicz's film, based on a screenplay by Józef Hen, consists of loosely linked images showing the soldiers of the First Polish Army and their everyday dilemmas at the front.
Two Poles escape from a Soviet labour camp to reach the Polish army forming on the Oka river.
A master corporal, who suffers from malaria, escapes from the hospital and joins his soldiers. A woman soldier brings a poem to the front newspaper - weak but authentic. A confrontation of peasant soldiers with pre-war aristocrats.
A soldier dies in a battle. Nobody can remember what he looked like. It takes some time for the troop to realize that someone is missing. Only his name remains in the records.
