Falconry is the art of hunting wild animals with the help of trained birds of prey in order to make a living, which originated more than 4000 years ago and has its history in the SPIŠ region. However, with the gradual development of society, the division of people into the wealthy and the non-wealthy, hunting took a different form and became a pastime and a matter of prestige. The only falconry of its kind in eastern Slovakia is located at the parking lot under Spišský hrad and offers performances with eagles, hawks and owls in its repertoire, with all animals coming from artificial breeding from Slovakia and abroad. Apart from the carefree watching of these birds of prey, tourists can also get acquainted with their way of life and also learn about the importance of protecting wild birds of prey.
Nowadays, falconers are mainly performers who put on a show in front of the audience in order to impress. Some are also involved in biological conservation - using raptors to scare away harmful birds and pigeons. Falconry also offers the opportunity to get acquainted with the way of life of bred birds of prey and to find out many interesting facts. An equally important part of falconry is education in bird conservation.
The falconers perform their shows in period costumes and can most often be found near castles, where they make the experience of history more enjoyable for the audience. Their performances are conducted interactively, showing the flight of birds of prey while offering information about specific birds. Birds of prey get very close to spectators during flight and may even land on the hand of some. It is possible to take photos with them and visitors can even pet some of them.
Since 2019, falconry has been listed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia.
