Ján Botto was an important Slovak Romantic poet who contributed to the creation of ballads and tales, which were mostly influenced by folk poetry. Ján Botto was one of the Štúrovo poets despite the fact that he never studied in Bratislava. One of his important works is the ballad Margita a Besná.
It is a story - a tale told by rafters on the Váh River in the past and preserved to this day. The story begins with the wedding of a widower to a young woman who is almost the age of his daughter. After the death of her father, his daughter meets a handsome young man. Conflict arises, however, when the bachelor also takes a liking to the young widow, who does not hesitate to get rid of her stepdaughter by throwing her off the rock Margita into the Váh. Later, however, her conscience consumes her and she decides to end her life by jumping from the rock Besná. According to folklore, the stepmother drowns rafters on the Váh to this day, until both rocks fall and the Váh bed is freed.
The legend mentions the rocks Margita and Besná, which are part of the Domašinský meander - a natural monument in Mala Fatra on the Váh River, which is directly connected to the Starý hrad National Park. The meander divides the Little Fatra into the Lúčanská and Krivánská parts. It is basically an excavated form of the river relief of the Váh River, on the basis of which the Strečiansky Pass was created. In the past, this section was rightly described as one of the most dangerous sections for rafting, which is still maintained in the village of Strečno today. If tourists decide to follow the red tourist sign, they will reach the ruins of the Old Castle, from where they have the most impressive view of the Domašinský meander.
