The history of Slovakia is undoubtedly connected with the mining of mineral resources. Mining activities took place almost everywhere, the territory was rich in high-quality metal ores - especially copper and iron ores, but also silver and gold.
The mining industry flourished most in the 12th-13th centuries. Surface deposits were mined out and it was necessary to get underground. Deep mining required shafts to be sunk, ventilation systems to be built and drainage to be provided, all of which required large sums of money. Initially with the help of foreign investors, and later with the help of the church and local landowners, mining towns began to be built.
In the 13th century, Gelnica and the surrounding area with its silver and iron ore reserves became an important mining centre. As many as 400 workers worked in the mines of Gelnica and the presence of precious ores earned the town the title of a free royal mining town. In the second half of the 19th century, the most widespread craft in Gelnica was the production of iron nails and chains. The war period in the following century caused a decline in the town, as outdated equipment and poorly profitable quarrying brought mining to a halt.
The history of mining is presented by the Mining Museum in Gelnica. It also includes a mining open-air museum where visitors can try their hand at working with the mining tool pochwerk. This is a water-powered tool that was used to separate small veins from other rocks and then extract the components for copper production. As part of your visit to the museum, it is also possible to book a tour of the Jozef adit.
