Mysterious legends connected with the catacombs under the Church of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle

Underground spaces raise many questions among people about the unknown and unexplored. Moreover, if these specific places are shrouded in mystery, secrets or legends, they arouse even more interest among domestic and foreign tourists. The "catacombs" under the Church of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle, which are associated with several legends, are no exception. Many local people, especially the older inhabitants of the town, believe that there are corridors leading under Mariánské Square, which in the past could be used to reach Budatín Castle or even Strečno Castle. These bold theories have not yet been confirmed, but it must be added in the same breath that they have not been disproved either, as many of the corridors remain buried and still inspire many tourists' imaginations.
Another legend tells of the fortune teller Agatha, whose oracles were feared by the people and for this reason they one day refused to shelter her in their houses during bad weather. Eventually she found shelter in the catacombs, which, along with the church and the monastery, were the only places in Marian Square that withstood the great fire.
Today, these spaces are not presented as catacombs in the true sense of the word, because they did not serve as a shelter for persecuted Christians. Rather, they are Gothic cellars that belonged to the townhouses, which gradually found themselves underground as the square was transformed. In some places, the entrance to the house has been preserved, so it is obvious that these spaces did not serve as cellars. If someone is interested in history and likes places connected with mystery, they should visit this place.
