Pop art style originated as a reaction to abstract expressionism in England in the late 20th century. It made its way to the USA in the early 1960s. The most important and best-known representative of American Pop Art was the painter and film producer Andy Warhol, whose roots go back to the village of Miková in Slovakia.
Pop art is associated with the use of a technique - the so-called serigraphy. Artists used this technique to mass-produce graphics in bright colours.
Warhol's work was characterised by taking photographic stencils of stylised celebrity portraits and transferring them via serigraphy from the 'silver screen' to paper, using bright and contrasting colours. The screen-printing technique allowed him to simply and variably reproduce and repeat a single motif over and over again. One of his first works was a print of Marilyn Monroe, which inspired him to continue creating in this style. Early on, he pointed out the relationship between art and industrial production, often also in comic form, painting Coca Cola bottles or Campbell's soup cans.
Andy Warhol's best-known works include: Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, Lenin, Mick Jagger, Edward Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, Goethe, Queen Ntombi, Saint Apollonie, Mildred Scheel, Campbell`s Soup, Flowers, Grapes, After the Party, Hammer and Sickle, Skulls, Shadows, Guns, Knives, Crosses, Zeitgeist, Camouflage, Dollar Signs, St. Georgie and the Dragon, Ladies and Gentleman, Sitting Bull, Love, Cowboys and Indians, Northwest Coast Mask, Santa Claus, The Shadow, Theddy Roosevelt, Castle Neuschwanstein, Last Supper, wallpapers: Cow Wallpaper and Silver Clouds, Mao, Self- Portrait, Fish, and many other works.
The pop-art work of the successful artist of Ruthenian origin can be seen at the Andy Warhol Museum, which is located in Medzilaborce.
