More and more tourists are attracted by something unfamiliar, something that is not in plain sight every day, simply something related to an adrenaline experience. Many tourists therefore choose the SPIŠ region and its surroundings because their hobby is exploring the underground natural beauties of the region. There are places here that are freely accessible to tourists, but for the more adventurous nature, or for the cavers themselves, there are many places in this region that are still waiting to be discovered.
A cave is a natural underground cavernous space, formed in the karst - by dissolution, efflorescence, weathering. In volcanic rocks as a gas hole or even on the coast by the action of tidal waves. There are over 7100 known caves in Slovakia.
In the beginning, caves were an object of interest for prehistoric man, who sought refuge in them from cold, bad weather, enemies or wild animals. Gradually, however, they moved out of them and into their first dwellings. Yet he returned to them for millennia. He considered their dark and cold spaces to be where dark spirits, evil goblins or supernatural creatures such as a dragon or monster he feared dwelt.
Early explorers found the bones of various animals that had found their end in the caves, most of which were thought to be the remains of dragons. These findings gave the name to many karst formations and thus the dragon (Dragon's Cave, Dragon's Abyss, Dragon's Hole...) Later, the caves became home to poachers, hunters and also bandits. Many legends tell about them.
"Treasures" in the form of various archaeological finds have been found in the caves. For example, fragments of prehistoric vessels, shards, bone needles, old tools. Sometimes even coins. And also the bones of animals, unfortunately sometimes human, when in the caves found their end man.
One such cave is also in the village of Porac in the Spiš region. It is called Šarkanova hole and is open to the public.
