Puppet theatre has a rich history in Slovakia, initially associated with the travelling puppeteers who developed this style of art on our territory. Individual generations contributed to the development and especially to the preservation of puppet theatre by spending time together, for example, at family celebrations (birthdays, weddings, funerals), in annual customs (nativity plays, carnival processions, Morena and yarn weaving), in puppet plays themselves, or in family puppet theatres or fairs.
Ján Stražan (1856-1939) was the first to attempt to professionalize puppet theatre in Slovakia, establishing the first puppet theatre in Slovakia - known as the Stražan Theatre or the Great Gašpark Theatre. Thanks to Žilina puppeteer Teodor Zvar, the Žilina Puppet Theatre was founded on 1 September 1950, which is known not only at home, but also in more than 37 countries on 4 continents of the world.
