Description of the place
Baligród - a village in Poland located in Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Lesko County, Baligród Municipality, in the valley of the Hoczewka River. It used to be a town, as evidenced by urban buildings with a rectangular market square. In the course of warfare and subsequent battles with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, Baligród was largely destroyed and suffered severe population losses. In the middle of the market square stands a tank - a T-34 tank - replacing the T-70 tank placed here earlier, which in 1944 was used by the Red Army for reconnaissance activities and took part in battles with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. The Baligrod T-70 was the last surviving tank of its type in Poland. In 1975 it was, on the initiative of officers from the Higher School of Armored Forces in Poznań, transported to Poznań, where it was refurbished and transferred to the Armored Weapons Museum. Baligród and its surroundings, is an excellent place for recreation, close to the Goloborze Nature Reserve and the Solina Lagoon, specifically to Wolkowya.
A place in the movie
In the film "Ogniomistrz Kaleń", the headquarters of the Polish army is located in Baligrod, where several scenes take place; it is also mentioned by name several times in the film. It was called Diabligrod by the soldiers stationed here because of the town's bloody history - during the war and just after, fratricidal fights between Poles and Ukrainians took place here and the Germans killed most of the town's Jews during the occupation. In the 1961 film "Ogniomistrz Kaleń" the protagonist describes the town this way: "A vile hole, captain. Everything here reeks of blood."
