Description of the place
Olkusz is a commune town in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship and the seat of Olkusz County. The city is located in the historic region of the Lesser Poland region in the eastern part of the Krakow-Częstochowa Upland on the Baba River, 6 km south of the Bledowska Desert. Olkusz is called the Silver City due to the medieval traditions of silver and lead mining. There are many attractive sights in the town, including St. Andrew's Basilica - a hall church with wall paintings and one of the oldest Renaissance organs in Europe from the early 17th century, preserved close to the original. Noteworthy is also the modern Olkusz Underground Museum, located in the basement of the Olkusz Market Square, where the turbulent history of the city is presented.
A place in the movie
Several locations and objects from Olkusz appear in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning Schindler's List, based on the real-life story of the German entrepreneur Oscar Schindler, as well as on the fate of the Jewish population of the Krakow ghetto during World War II. These are e.g. Hospital and Healthcare Complex at Aleja Tysiąclecia 13 and Olkuska Fabryka Naczyń Emaliowanych (Enamelware Factory) at ul. 1000 - lecia 15 D. Huta Bolesław in Olkusz was important for Polish filmmakers.
