Country: Poland

Description of the place

Oświęcim is situated in the center of the Oświęcim Basin, between the Carpathian Foothills and the Silesian Upland, at the mouth of the Soła River to the Vistula River. The village has a documented history since the times of Bolesław the Brave. Historically, it belonged to Lesser Poland or Silesia. The cultural influences of both these regions can be felt in Oświęcim. After the start of World War II, Oświęcim was occupied by the Wehrmacht and incorporated into the Reich. The largest German concentration camp and extermination center Auschwitz-Birkenau was built here. Currently, the former camp is home to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, established in 1947, and in 1979 inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A place in the movie

Oświęcim functions in world cinematography primarily as a background for events related to the Holocaust. In "Trip into the Unknown", which also touches on these topics, post-war Oświęcim appears. railway station. An interesting fact is that Spielberg failed to obtain permission to shoot "Schindler's List" in Auschwitz. That is why the director built a faithful replica near the death camp.
