Description of the place

Svinia is one of the oldest villages in the former Šariš County. It is located in the Šariš Highlands in the valley of the Veľká and Mala Svinka. There are several important monuments from the past. The Roman Catholic, Gothic church dating from the 13th century, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. In the 17th century a Renaissance tower was added to the church. Another preserved monument is the Curia, a one-storey building with flat ceilings, which now houses a primary special school. The manor house from the second half of the 18th century has also been preserved. The rooms in this manor house are vaulted with Prussian vaults. The women's folklore group Svinianka is active here. Tourists have the opportunity to visit the Dutkovský Forest. Accommodation is available in nearby Prešov.

A place in the movie

In a small village near Prešov, director Marko Škop made a documentary film "Other Worlds", in which he captures life in a Roma settlement using the example of Ignác Červeňák's family. The film highlights the poverty, the difficult conditions in which the Roma live, the specifics of the settlement and the mentality of the people living there. Because of criminality, the settlers often stand alone against their own.
