Description of the place
The town of Veľký Šariš, through which the Torysa River flows, is located in the southeastern part of the Spiš-Sariš Interfluve in its subdivision Šarišské podolie with Šarišský vrch. The dominant feature of the town is Šariš Castle, which used to be one of the largest castles in Slovakia. The improvement of its ruins also contributes to the development of tourism. Another tourist attraction is the historic steam locomotive called Mľinska džurka, which is probably the oldest steam locomotive with a normal gauge in Slovakia. In the town there is the Church of St. James, the Chapel of St. Elizabeth and the Chapel of St. Kunhuta. Visitors also have the opportunity to visit the Rakoci Mansion and the Municipal Museum and Gallery. Another interesting feature is the recently built bridge on the cycle path between Veľký Šariš and Šarišské Michaľany, which stands directly below Šariš Castle and has pillars resembling fortification walls. The very famous Šariš brewery is located here. There are also accommodation and catering options in the town.
A place in the movie
The town with the towering castle in the background reminds us of a piece of history. In the film "Other Worlds", director Marko Škop filmed several scenes at Šariš Castle, where all the main characters met. At the beginning of the film, Mr. Ján Lazorík from Kriviany, standing on this ruin, talks about today's people, their values and the meaning of life. Showing views of the surrounding beauty of nature, he talks about the Šarišany people. He himself is a proud Šarišan. In the town of Veľký Šariš, a sequel to the film Grazing Horses on Concrete was also filmed, entitled "...horses on concrete".
