When wandering through the beautiful region of Spiš, tourists mostly notice the beautiful untouched nature, which is not yet in this part of Slovakia so marked by modern architecture We can find here a number of historical monuments, in the form of castles and chateaus, or places that tourists can explore a little differently. We are referring to a number of intriguing legends that are linked to the region and allow tourists to verify the book version directly in practice.

For mystery admirers, the SPIŠ region also offers several legends and dramatic stories. However, tourists vainly expect a happy ending; most of the time the story ends in betrayal, cruel punishment, even death. The most famous story is the legend of Hedwig, the sister of the thirteenth-century castle lord Philip Drughet.

The castle lord Philip I and his wife fathered a daughter, whom they named Barborka. However, Lujza, Philip's mistress, died shortly after giving birth and the upbringing of the daughter was given to Philip's sister Hedwig. The lord of the castle could not cope with the death of his wife and tried to beat his grief by hunting. On one such hunt, tragedy struck and Philip shot the son of a Polish nobleman. The latter swore revenge on him. Philip stayed alert and on the next hunt issued a ban on entering the castle to protect his daughter. However, the Polish nobleman set a trap and sent only one of his soldiers to the castle, disguised as a wandering artist. He easily got inside and seduced Hedwig. During her inattention, the soldier let other soldiers into the castle, who kidnapped Philip's daughter and escaped. Philip learned of this and decided to pursue the Polish retinue. When he had almost caught up with them, the Polish nobleman threw Barbora into the abyss before his eyes. After returning back to the castle, Philip had the entire castle garrison tortured and planned revenge for his sister as well. She, however, went mad with despair and jumped from the castle tower. Others claim that Philip had both her hands cut off or beheaded. Who knows how it was, but the ghost of Hedvig can still be seen in the bowels of Spiš Castle to this day, calling out to Barborka and trying to find her.
