Description of the place
Poprad is a district town located in the north-east of Slovakia in the Prešov Region. The so-called gateway to the High Tatras has an international airport. The most interesting monument zone in Poprad is the historical centre of the town district of Spišská Sobota, which houses the most precious architectural monument, the Church of St. George with five late Gothic winged altars and the main altar by Master Paul of Levoča. It was built on the border between late Gothic and Renaissance. Other attractions of the town include the Tatra Gallery and the Podtatranské Museum, or the beer baths in the Tatras brewery. Tourists may also be attracted by the Flower House, the climbing wall, or the Aquacity Poprad.
A place in the movie
The foothill town, with the majestic Tatra Mountains looming in the background, has also appealed to filmmakers. Tomáš Weinreb and Petr Kazda filmed a scene of the psychological film "I, Olga Hepnarová", in which the main character Olga and Valierová travel in a trabant, on the route Poprad - Spišské Bystré and Poprad - Lučivná - Liptovská Teplička, in which the main character Olga and Valierová travel in a trabant. Karel Janák shot the film "Confidential Enemy" and Jiří Sequens the crime series "30 Cases of Major Zeman" at the Poprad airport. The historical centre of Sobotka Square fascinated the makers of "The Eagle Feather", "The Melancholic Chicken", "The Man Who Lies" and "Adam Shangala". The railway line Veľký Slavkov - Poprad and Poprad - Svit was used by the creators of the film "Zelená lata" and the Czech series "Vyprávěj". Scenes of the award-winning sports-themed film "Snow Underfoot" were also filmed in Poprad. In the Church of St. George there is an altar from the workshop of Master Paul, which is mentioned in the documentary "In the footsteps of Master Paul". Mass was celebrated in this church in 1967, during which the documentary "Mass" was made.
