Description of the place
A picturesquely situated town in the Nowy Sącz district. Due to the crossing of the Dunajec that has been active here since ancient times, at least from the 8th century this place, called the Sadecka Gate, was an important point on the route running from Byzantium to the Baltic Sea. Currently, there is also a ferry here, which can be used to cross from Tropie to Wytrzyszczka.
In the village, there is a historic church of St. Świerad and St. Benedict. It is one of the oldest sacral buildings in Poland (11th century), which, according to traditional accounts, was erected on the site of an even older Slavic sacred grove and shrine. The first settlers here were prospectors of gold and other precious metals. The former hermitage of St. Świerad, who was probably one of the earliest propagators of Christianity in this area, remains today in the village.
A place in the movie
The village appears in films about small provincial towns. It was the location for the filming of Dziura w ziemi, Andrzej Kondratiuk's outstanding 1970 feature debut. Locations in Zakliczyn, Stary and Nowy Sącz, as well as the railway bridge over the Dunajec River between Nowy Sącz and Marcinkowice, were also used for this picture.
In Małgorzata Szumowska's film Twarz one of the scenes shows the local ferry crossing.
