About the movie
The film is a costume story about Mandrin - the hero of the Paris Commune sometimes called the "French Robin Hood". It's 1750. Louis Mandrin, a cooper, disrupts the arrival of a high government official in the city of Saint-Etienne-de-Saint-Geoire and is fined heavily. Depressed by the situation, he decides to flee to Switzerland. On the way, however, he meets people who are also repressed by the authorities. He helps them and, willy-nilly, becomes the leader of the gang, acting against the financial restrictions of the rulers.
