The highest peak of the Tatras is Gerlach (2654) located in Slovakia. Rysy mountain (2499) dominates the Polish Tatras. Apart from the peaks, the Tatra Mountains abound in beautiful valleys and passes, which once played an important communication, trade and strategic role. Every year, thousands of tourists travel along the numerous tourist trails of the Tatra Mountains. There are also many ski resorts. The Great European Watershed runs through the Tatra Mountains. To the east and north of it lie the catchment area of the Baltic Sea, the basin of the Dunajec and Poprad rivers, the remaining area is the catchment area of the Black Sea, the basin of the Orava and Váh rivers. The Tatra Mountains are unique due to their natural values and the richness of endemic species. That is why they have been protected by establishing national parks on the Polish and Slovak sides. They belong to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The ethnographic lands surrounding the Tatra Mountains are Podhale, Spiš, Orava and Liptov.

A place in the movie

The Tatra Mountains play a very diverse role in Polish films. They are often the background for historical productions, especially those related to World War II. For obvious reasons, they are also used in films about tourism and sports. Many productions focus on the local flavour associated with the life of highlanders - with their everyday life, legends and traditions. Due to their spectacular visual qualities, they are also used as a backdrop for commercial entertainment productions, including romantic comedies and sensational films.
