Description of the place
The village was formed by the merger of the settlements of Nižné Šváby, Červený Kláštor and Smerdžonka. It is located in the Kežmarok district in the Dunajec valley on the border with Poland. It has two local parts: Červený Kláštor and Červený Kláštor spa. Červený Kláštor is an important tourist resort and the Pieniny National Park extends into the municipality. An important monument is the former Carthusian monastery called the Red Monastery and is the best preserved medieval monastery in Slovakia. It is worth mentioning the Dunajec River or the Red Monastery Spa Smerdžonka.
A place in the movie
The unusual surroundings of the Red Monastery have attracted filmmakers in the past. Róbert Šveda set the story of one of the three short stories of the award-winning film "Demons" here. Scenes of the comedy fairy tale "The Devil Knows Why" were filmed along the Dunajec River. The Dunajec can also be seen in the film "The Eagle Feather", where border guards follow the sheep smuggled by Valér. The director Miro Damonson made a documentary "Tatry, Spiš, Pieniny", in which he points out the tourist attractions in the village of Červený Kláštor. In the Monastery Museum, director Mariana Čengel Solčanská placed the story of the Camaldolese monk Cyprian in the film "The Legend of Flying Cyprian". A film about the legendary Janošík "Jánošík - True History" was also filmed in the museum. The French co-production film "In the Currents" was also filmed in Červený Kláštor. "Goral tales" present not only the difficult everyday life of the Gorals, but also point out the striking nature and local customs.
