A young highlander, a participant in the Rakoczi uprising, Juraj Janosik, was drafted into the imperial army of Franz Józef I. When guarding the prisoners, he meets Tomasz Uhorczyk, the leader of the brigands. The highlanders become friends. Janosik helps Tomasz escape, and the latter repays him by giving him the money to leave the imperial army. Eventually, Janosik also joins the brigands and soon becomes their leader himself.
