Description of the place
As the third largest city in Slovakia, Prešov offers its visitors a wealth of tourist attractions. Surrounded by the Slanski Hills and the Šariš Highlands, the city has a rich history with many historical monuments. A beautiful Baroque Calvary towers over the town. There are several theatres in the town, the most famous of which is the Jonáš Záborski Theatre, several cinemas, museums, galleries and libraries. There is a wide range of accommodation and dining options. In the city centre there is St. Nicholas Cathedral, the city park with the oldest fountain of Neptune and the Liberators' Monument. The historic Theatre building is located nearby. Prešov Square is filled with historical buildings. Tourist attractions include the Caraffa Prison, the Rakoczy Palace, the Bosak Bank, the Town Hall, the District House, the Klobušícká Palace, the Florian's Gate, the Black Eagle, the Jewish Synagogue and the Town Observatory. Also noteworthy is the Orthodox Church of St. Alexander Nevsky.
A place in the movie
In the Šariš metropolis, director Štefan Uher filmed several well-known scenes from the award-winning film "She Grazed Horses on Concrete". Its sequel entitled ""...horses on concrete" was also filmed here. Prešov director Marko Škop shot scenes near the Centrál Shopping Centre in the Oscar-nominated film "Eva Nova". He shot a scene from the documentary "Osadné" in the district house. Several scenes from the documentary "Other Worlds" were shot in Fedor Vic's flat, an Orthodox Jewish synagogue and a carpet shop. Peter Mikulík shot the film 'Fragments from a Small Town' here, and the Staviarski family shot the comedy 'The Red Tomato'. Ján Stračina made a documentary film about the Prešov music scene called "Bars good film". The St. Nicholas Cathedral was also the location for the documentary series 'In the Footsteps of Master Paul'.
