About the movie
A tragicomic story of a carpenter, Tóna Brtek, who, thanks to his brother-in-law, a local commander of the Hlinka Guard, becomes an arranger of a haberdashery belonging to an old Jewish woman, Rozália Lautmann. At first Brtko did not agree to this offer, but under pressure from his wife Evelina he finally accepted it. Over time, Tóno finds his way to Mrs. Rozália and they help each other. However, everything changes when a summons arrives in the town for the immediate transport of the Jewish inhabitants.

- The Shop on Main Street has won numerous awards. In 1966, the film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
- After the success of the film in the USA, American writers made The Shop on Main Street into a musical. In Europe, this musical was first performed at the New Stage Theatre, Prague, in 2014. This time, the role of Mrs. Lautman was played by the daughter of Jozef Kroner - Zuzana Kronerová.
- An educational tourist route about the award-winning The Shop on Main Street was established in Sabinov. At the end of the route, tourists will find the Statue on Main Street, which depicts the main character. The route offers 11 stops with info boards resembling a film strip, on which information is laser engraved in three languages, namely English, German and Slovak (descriptions of scenes and a simple description of the plot). The innovative part of The Shop on Main Street walkway consists mainly of linking QR codes to mobile technology (smartphones and tablets). After scanning the QR code, the visitor can play a specific passage from the film that was shot at the location. There is a free Wi-Fi zone in the city centre. Thanks to the support of the Prešov Self-Governing Region, subtitles are available for each video in the following languages - English, German, Polish and Hungarian. A total of 6 interior scenes were filmed, 2 of which were filmed in Sabinov and 4 interior scenes later in Barrandov.
